Iowa of the Tiger: the 2012 Republican Iowa Caucuses
My roommate (right) and I at a Rock the Vote event.
The Manship School of Mass Communication provided the opportunity for 20 students to travel to Iowa for the 2012 Republican Caucuses as special reporters for the LSU and Baton Rouge community. Students from various Mass Communication concentrations covered numerous events held by five presidential candidates, as well as events sponsored by different news outlets such as POLITICO.com and MSNBC.
We published our stories on our own twitter accounts, Facebook pages, and a joint Tumblr blog account, Iowa of the Tiger.
Some of our stories were also published through the Huffington's Post's "Off the Bus" citizen journalism project and the Washington Post. We were able to interview residents of Iowa as well as the candidates themselves and some of their staff.
This trip was incredible, and confirmed my passion for politics and fueled my "election fever." Traveling back and forth to different candidates' events and updating our followers in real time was exhilarating. Additionally, we had equal opportunities of other members of the press: being able to stand in the media sections of rallies, and having the opportunity to ask questions alongside many political pundits and journalists. Below is a slideshow of some photos from the trip.
